De or het?
For animals, you can't guess by size or cuteness. 'De hond' is 'de', but 'het konijn' is 'het'. The best way: repeat the word with its article. 'De hond, de kat, de koe' , but 'het paard, het varken, het konijn'. Make a little chant: 'de hond, de kat, de koe; het paard, het varken, het konijn'.

The trap: 'de' for all animals?
Many animals are 'de', but not all. 'Het dier', 'het huisdier', 'het konijn', 'het paard', 'het varken', 'het hert' are all 'het'. The trick: learn the article with the word, not the animal. One gem: 'het dier' is the general word, but 'het huisdier' is a pet. So a pet is a 'huis-dier' , a house animal.
