De or het?

Nouns in Dutch have a gender: de or het. For example, 'de bus' (the bus) and 'het boek' (the book). When you learn a new noun, always learn it with its article. This helps you speak correctly from the start.

het
(no het words today)

Beter vs. best: the trap

In Dutch, 'beter' is the comparative and 'best' is the superlative. Use 'beter' when comparing two things, and 'best' when there is no comparison, just the top. For example: 'Dit boek is beter.' (This book is better.) vs. 'Dit is het beste boek.' (This is the best book.) Many learners mix them up, but now you know.
