Countries, landscapes and moving abroad

The Netherlands is flat-until your Dutch vocabulary says otherwise.

A landscape map rises and folds into a moving box. Geography becomes practical the moment you move.

De or het?

Most of today's words are 'de'. The exceptions are 'het meer', 'het kanaal' and 'het duin'. Remember: the lake, the canal, the dune are all 'het'. Practice with the exercise below.

de
de polder · de vesting · de wal · de zee · de rivier · de natuur · de dam · de dijk
het
het meer · het kanaal · het duin

The trap: 'de' or 'het'?

Many landscape words are 'de', but 'het meer', 'het kanaal' and 'het duin' are 'het'. Learn them as a trio: het meer, het kanaal, het duin. Say it three times. Now they are yours.

The interactive lesson plays every word, walks the story line by line, records your voice next to a native one, and remembers the ones you find hard. Lesson 1 needs no account.
