De or het: a small guide
Nouns for people and abstract processes often take 'de' (de buren, de inburgering). Documents and objects often take 'het' (het paspoort, het huurcontract). But there are exceptions. Learn each noun with its article from the start.

The trap: 'inschrijven' is not 'to write in'
In Dutch, 'inschrijven' means to register or sign up. You register at the municipality, for a course, or for an exam. It is not about writing inside something. Own this word and the bureaucracy opens.
