Let's Go Dutch

Lesson 7 of 50 · A0 to A1 · Free

Reasons, streets and transport

You miss the train, your bike is broken, and Dutch is suddenly urgent.

A commuter picks a way across the city and explains every decision. Two words mean because, and they do not sit in the same place.

Where the verb lands

This is the one piece of structure in this lesson. Read both lines out loud and listen to where is falls. That movement is the whole rule.

want
..., want mijn fiets is kapot
omdat
..., omdat mijn fiets kapot is

want and omdat, the real difference

Both mean because. After want the sentence carries on in normal order: ik neem de bus, want mijn fiets is kapot. After omdat the verb slides to the very end: ik loop, omdat de bus niet komt. Lean on want while you get comfortable. Nobody at this level will mind.

A broken bike and a busy street

Noor has to get across the city and nothing is cooperating. Read it once for the shape. Read it again out loud.
