Most clothes are de: de broek, de trui, de jas. A few are het: het T-shirt, het overhemd, het pak. When in doubt, say de. It works more often than not.

One word, two socks
Dutch has de sok for short socks and de kous for long ones. You wear kousen with a skirt or dress, sokken with pants. Feel the difference and the words fit.
