In this lesson, most words are de. But het vuur, het mes, het bord, het ei are het. When you learn a noun, always say it with its article. That's the Dutch way.

The trap: 'de' or 'het'?
Dutch nouns carry a gender. You can't always guess it. But here's the gem: most kitchen tools that end in -pan, -vork, -lepel are de. Het mes is the exception. Learn the article with the word, not alone. Then it becomes a habit.
