de or het?
In this lesson you have many de words and one het word: het zout. The rule of thumb: fruit and vegetables are usually de. Het zout is the exception here. When you meet a new food word, think: is it a fruit or vegetable? Then you already know the article. For other words, make a tiny image. One picture is enough.
- de
- de rijst · de peper · de suiker · de appel · de peer · de banaan · de perzik · de sinaasappel
- het
- het zout
The de/het trick
Most fruit and vegetables are de words. Het zout is the odd one out. When you learn a new food word, ask: is it a fruit or vegetable? If yes, it is almost always de. For everything else, just make a small picture. For het zout, see a salt shaker on a table. That picture helps you remember het. You do not need to learn every article by heart. You just need one picture per het word.
