Some nouns are always de, like de fiets and de zon. Others are always het, like het huis and het kind. You don't need a rule for every word. You need to hear them often. The article is part of the word. Learn it that way.

The trap: verbs with fixed prepositions
Dutch verbs often carry a fixed preposition. You don't 'dream of' , you dromen van. You don't 'enjoy' , you genieten van. You don't 'trust' , you vertrouwen op. Learn the verb and its preposition as one unit. That is the trap. Own it.
