De or het: tools and devices
Most tools and devices are de: de schaar, de machine, de computer, de telefoon, de sleutel. Het is for the small and the material: het gereedschap, het slot, het papier, het hout. When in doubt, say de. It is often right.

The trap: 'knippen' vs 'snijden'
Knippen is cutting with scissors. Snijden is cutting with a knife. The scissors cut paper, a knife cuts bread. If you use the wrong one, people understand, but they smile. Own the difference and you sound careful.
