De or het? Five materials
Some materials are de, some are het. You just have to feel them. De lucht, de stof, de aarde. Het ijzer, het staal. Say them out loud with the article. That is the whole trick.

The trap: 'al' means already, but also all
You already know 'al' as 'already'. But in Dutch, 'al' can also mean 'all' when it stands before a noun. For example: 'al het staal' means 'all the steel'. The trick is to watch the word after it. If you see a noun, it means 'all'. If you see a verb, it means 'already'. Own that, and you will never mix them up again.
