Lesson 48 of 50 · A0 to A1 · Free
Directions, safety and the news
Directions are boring until safety depends on them.
A breaking-news map forces quick directional choices. Serious words need clear context, not dramatic confusion.

de or het?
Some nouns are de, some are het. There is no rule, but you can learn them in pairs: de oefening, de oorlog, de aanval, de krant are de. Het leger, het bloed, het nieuws are het. Say them together: 'de krant, het nieuws'.

- het
- het leger · het bloed · het nieuws
The compass trap
In Dutch, north, east, south, west almost always come with het: het noorden, het oosten, het zuiden, het westen. You say 'naar het noorden' (to the north), not 'naar noord'. It feels like a small detail, but it makes your Dutch sound calm and sure. Own it: always add -en and the article.
The map on the news
A quiet afternoon changes when the news shows a map.
