Let's Go Dutch

Lesson 5 of 50 · A0 to A1 · Free

Everyday food and Dutch snack culture

Dutch breakfast looks innocent until chocolate starts falling on bread.

A breakfast table turns into a snack-bar showdown. And yes, hagelslag is breakfast. Not a dessert emergency.

hagelslag, explained

Chocolate sprinkles, on buttered bread, eaten by adults, at breakfast, entirely without irony. It is not a dessert and nobody is joking. Accepting it in a Dutch kitchen is the fastest way to stop being treated as a guest.

Breakfast, then the snack counter

Noor eats breakfast the Dutch way, then finds out what happens after six in the evening. Read it once for the shape. Read it again out loud.
