Woordenschat
Right, so your partner has their in-burgring exam tomorrow, the big one, the speaking part.
And tonight they are falling apart on your sofa.
Maybe you're trying to help.
Maybe you are making it worse.
Maybe you cannot tell the difference anymore.
This is a very specific kind of evening.
Because you want to be supportive, but you also want to test them.
You want to be honest, but you also want to be kind.
And your partner is switching between panic and dark humour every 30 seconds.
Here is what usually happens.
You start with vocabulary, then grammar, then you ask a practice question
and they burst into tears, then they laugh.
Then they say something in Dutch that is almost right and you freeze.
Because if you correct them now, they will explode.
But if you say nothing, they will think they are doing it perfectly
and then fail tomorrow.
Welcome to the night before the exam.
In today's scene, Sarah is on the couch with Thijs.
Tomorrow is her inburgering speaking exam.
She is exhausted.
He is trying to help.
It is messy and real and somehow by the end they find one solid thing she can hold on to.
Three things to listen for.
One, notice how Thijs coaches without correcting every single error.
He lets some mistakes go.
He repeats back the correct version naturally without stopping her flow.
Two, listen to how Sarah allows herself to be bad.
She laughs at her mistakes.
She does not pretend to be fluent.
She says, this is where I am.
Three, listen for how they end.
They do not try to fix everything.
They pick one phrase, one anchor.
Something she can lean on when her mind goes blank tomorrow.
Let's listen.
Oké. Laatste keer, hoor. Dan stoppen we. Klaar?
Ja. Nee. Misschien.
Ik vraag: waarom wil je inburgeren?
Omdat... omdat ik hier woon.
En ik wil... eh... deelnemen? Aan de maatschappij.
Mooi. Heel goed.
Even dimmen nu. Nog één vraag.
Dan thee. Dan bed.
Oké.
Vertel over een moeilijke situatie in Nederland.
Hoe heb je dat opgelost?
Oh god.
in mijn tong.
mag ik even nadenken?
Maar even denken? Dat mag.
Langzaam praten mag.
Dat is niet hetzelfde als niet praten.
Ja.
Graag gedaan, lieverd.
That scene.
That is what the night before looks like.
Not perfect practice.
Not a mock exam.
Just two people on a sofa trying to hold it together.
Thijs did something very smart there.
He stopped correcting.
He let Sarah's mistakes sit in the air.
When she said,
Deelnemen aan de maatschappij a bit awkwardly.
He did not jump in.
He let her finish.
He responded to the meaning, not the grammar.
That is what she needs the night before.
Not a teacher.
A witness.
And Sarah did something brave.
She admitted she is scared.
She said,
I will say stupid things.
And Thijs did not argue with her.
He said,
Yes, probably.
And that is fine.
That is the gift.
Not reassurance that she will be perfect.
Reassurance that she can survive being imperfect.
Now, three things to take with you.
First,
when you do not know the answer,
you can say,
I am not sure.
Not,
I do not know.
That sounds too final.
Ik weet het niet zeker.
Sounds thoughtful.
It buys you a second.
It keeps the door open.
Second,
remember this.
Langzaam praten mag.
Stil zijn mag even ook.
Speaking slowly is allowed.
Being quiet for a moment is also allowed.
You do not have to fill every silence.
You do not have to rush.
The examiner is not timing your pauses with a stopwatch.
Breathe.
Think.
Speak.
Third.
And this is the one to write down.
Morgen ben ik gewoon Sarah.
Niet de beste student.
Tomorrow, I am just Sarah.
Not the best student.
You are not auditioning for fluency.
You are showing up as yourself.
Imperfect.
Trying.
Human.
That is enough.
Good luck tomorrow.
You will be fine.
And if you are not fine,
you will survive anyway.
Tot de volgende keer.
En heel veel succes.
