Fietsen in de spits en 'om ... te'

Haló?

Yes, I hear you!

Goedenavond!

Met mij gaat het ook heel goed, dank je wel.

You asked where I live—well, I'm right here in your headphones, helping you navigate your life in Amsterdam.

You told me your big goal is: 'Ik hoop ik kan sprak Nederlands heel goed.' I love that, and since you told me you are really enthusiastic about words, we're going to get your Dutch to that professional level you want.

Since you live in Amsterdam now, I know you have to deal with 'de spits' every single day.

Rush hour.

When you commute to work, 'het fietspad'—the bike path—is absolute chaos.

You've probably noticed that everyone always seems to be in a rush.

We use the reflexive verb 'zich haasten' for this, which means to hurry.

People constantly ring their bells because they want to overtake you.

The verb for overtaking is 'inhalen'.

Ze willen je inhalen.

But why is everyone rushing?

To get to work on time, of course.

This brings us to a very useful grammar structure.

When you want to say 'in order to do something' in English, you often just say 'to do'.

In Dutch, we use the structure: om + te + infinitive.

For example: 'Ik fiets snel om op tijd te komen.' I bike fast in order to arrive on time.

The word 'om' starts the phrase, and 'te' comes right before the full verb at the very end of the sentence.

Let's apply this to your own goal: 'Ik oefen om heel goed Nederlands te spreken.' You use this structure whenever there is a clear goal or purpose.

Back to the Amsterdam traffic.

When you approach an intersection near the canals, you often have to give right of way.

We call this 'voorrang verlenen'.

You have to pay close attention, because honestly, some people bike quite dangerously, or 'roekeloos'—reckless.

They don't look, they just go!

So, to survive your Amsterdam commute, you need to stay calm when people try to inhalen, you need to know when to voorrang verlenen, and you definitely shouldn't be roekeloos.

Tomorrow morning, when you are on het fietspad heading to work, I want you to look around.

Try to make one sentence in your head using the 'om ... te' structure.

Talk to you soon!
