Short and long vowels

Dutch has five vowels that come in a short and a long version: a and aa, e and ee, i and ie, o and oo, u and uu. The short one is quick and sharp; the long one has a slightly different sound and is usually held longer. Swap them and you get another word: man is a man, maan is the moon.

The pattern

In a stressed syllable (the loud beat of a word) that ends in a consonant, a single vowel letter usually means a short, sharp vowel, as in man. A doubled letter, or ie, mostly means its long partner, as in maan: a different sound that is usually also longer.

  • a and aa: man (man, husband) and maan (moon)
  • e and ee: pet (cap) and peet (godparent)
  • i and ie: zit (sits) and ziet (sees); Dutch writes the long one ie, not ii
  • o and oo: bom (bomb) and boom (tree)
  • u and uu: bus (bus) and buur (neighbour)
  • In longer words a long vowel can have just one letter, as in manen (moons): see open and closed syllables.

Examples

Mijn man werkt in Utrecht. My husband works in Utrecht.
De maan is mooi vanavond. The moon is beautiful tonight.
Daan draagt de pet van zijn peet.Daan is wearing his godparent's cap.
Ik ben moe.I am tired.
Mijn been doet pijn.My leg hurts.
Ahmed zit in de trein.Ahmed is sitting on the train.
Fatima ziet de trein.Fatima sees the train.
De zon schijnt. The sun is shining.
Mijn zoon fietst naar school. My son cycles to school.
De bus is duur. The bus is expensive.

Why it works this way

Think of a piano. A short vowel is a quick tap on one key. Its long partner is the key next door, and you usually hold it down. So maan is not a stretched man: you move to a new key. To Dutch ears, bom and boom are as different as ship and sheep are to English ears.

Each pair differs like this:

  • a is dark, nearer the o in American hot than the a in English man; aa is brighter and longer, a bit like the a in father.
  • e is the e in bed, i the i in sit; ee is close to the ay in day, ie is the ee in see.
  • o is close to the o in British dog; oo is close to oh. The English oo sound is a different Dutch vowel, oe: see vowel combinations.
  • u has no English twin: try the vowel of her, short, with rounded lips. uu is ie said with rounded lips.

Two pairs need an honest footnote: ie and uu only sound clearly long before r, as in bier and muur. Elsewhere, as in ziet, the difference from zit is mostly the tighter, clearer sound.

Spanish has no long vowels, so Spanish speakers should exaggerate them at first. German and Arabic speakers already have short and long vowels, which is a head start.

Train your ear with minimal pairs: two words that differ in one sound only, like pet and peet. Hear them side by side and the line between them becomes clear.

Remember: a long vowel is the key next door, usually held down; change the sound, not just the length.

Watch out

  • خطأMijn nam is Carlos.

    صوابMijn naam is Carlos.

naam, name, has a long aa; nam means took

  • خطأIk been moe.

    صوابIk ben moe.

ben has a short e; been is a leg

  • خطأIk zee de bus.

    صوابIk zie de bus.

the sound of English ee is spelled ie; zee is the sea

  • خطأIk zook mijn fiets.

    صوابIk zoek mijn fiets.

Dutch oo sounds like oh; the English oo sound is spelled oe

Quick check

  1. Choose: Mijn ... werkt bij de gemeente. (man / maan)
  2. Choose: Lotte zit onder de ... in het park. (bom / boom)
  3. Fix the sentence: Mijn zon is drie jaar.
  4. Choose: Yara ... de bus niet. (zit / ziet)
اعرض الإجابات
  1. man (short a; the moon has no job at the gemeente)
  2. boom (long oo means tree; a bom is a bomb)
  3. Mijn zoon is drie jaar. (long oo means son; zon is the sun)
  4. ziet (long ie means sees; zit means sits)

Use it today

Say these pairs out loud, slowly and then fast: man and maan, pet and peet, zit and ziet, bom and boom. Then ask a Dutch colleague or neighbour to say one word from each pair, and guess which one you heard.

أسئلة المتعلمين

What is the difference between short and long vowels in Dutch?

Dutch has five vowel pairs: a/aa, e/ee, i/ie, o/oo and u/uu. The short vowel is quick and sharp, while the long one has a slightly different sound and is usually held longer, and swapping them changes the word, as in man (man) and maan (moon).

How do you pronounce ee and oo in Dutch?

Dutch ee sounds close to the "ay" in English "day", and oo close to "oh". The English "ee" and "oo" sounds are written ie and oe in Dutch, as in zien and zoeken.

Why does Dutch write vowels double, like aa and oo?

In a short word like maan, boom or peet, the double letter shows that the vowel is long. Write a single letter instead and you get a different word: man, bom or pet.
