The passive with worden

When you want to say what happens to something rather than who does it, Dutch uses the passive: a form of worden plus a past participle (the form from the perfect tense, like verkocht or gebouwd). So Het huis wordt verkocht means the house is being sold. Add door to name the doer, and use werd or werden for the past: Het huis werd in 1920 gebouwd.

The pattern

Combine a form of worden with a past participle, which usually goes at the end of the clause. To name the doer, put door in front of it.

  • Present: the verb agrees with the subject (who or what the sentence is about): ik word; jij or je wordt, but word jij or word je when it follows the verb; hij, zij, het and u wordt. Plural subjects take worden: De brief wordt verstuurd, De brieven worden verstuurd.
  • Past: werd with any singular subject, werden with plurals: De brug werd in 1890 gebouwd.
  • In a main clause, wordt or werd takes second place and the participle usually goes to the end, as in the perfect tense: Morgen wordt het pakket bezorgd.
  • In a subordinate clause (one that starts with a word like dat or omdat), both verbs go to the end, in either order: omdat het pakket morgen wordt bezorgd or omdat het pakket morgen bezorgd wordt.
  • Naming the doer is optional, and many passive sentences leave it out.

Examples

Het huis van onze buren wordt verkocht. Our neighbours' house is being sold.
Het afval wordt elke dinsdag opgehaald. The rubbish is collected every Tuesday.
De brief wordt door de directeur getekend. The letter is signed by the director.
Wordt u al geholpen? Are you being served?
Bij de huisarts word je vaak eerst door de doktersassistent geholpen. At the GP's, you are often helped by the doctor's assistant first.
Gisteren werden alle treinen naar Utrecht geannuleerd.Yesterday all trains to Utrecht were cancelled.
Bij het ongeluk werd een fietser door een bestelbus geraakt. In the accident, a cyclist was hit by a van.
Uw parkeervergunning wordt automatisch verlengd.Your parking permit is renewed automatically.
Fatima weet nog niet of haar aanvraag wordt goedgekeurd.Fatima doesn't know yet whether her application will be approved.

Why it works this way

The hook is in the verb itself: worden means become, as you saw in Worden: become, and the passive. Het huis wordt verkocht is literally the house becoming sold. Something is happening to it, so Dutch uses a verb of change where English uses be.

The passive turns an active sentence around. In De directeur tekent de brief, the director is the subject. In De brief wordt door de directeur getekend, the letter takes that spot, and the director becomes an optional extra.

Use it when the doer is unknown, obvious or beside the point. Nobody cares who empties your bin, only that it happens on Tuesday. That is why news reports and official letters love the passive: Uw aanvraag wordt binnen acht weken behandeld keeps the focus on what happens and the tone factual.

In conversation, people often use the perfect for past events (Het huis is in 1920 gebouwd), so werd tends to sound more written: think news, history and stories. Relaxed speech also likes a vague ze instead of a passive: Ze halen het afval op dinsdag op (see Men, je and ze).

Remember: when English uses is or are with a participle for something happening now, regularly or soon, Dutch uses wordt or worden. A Dutch is plus participle points to a finished action or its result, which is the topic of The passive in the perfect.

Watch out

  • FoutDe brief wordt van de directeur getekend.

GoedDe brief wordt door de directeur getekend.

Dutch introduces the doer with door; van is a German habit

  • FoutGisteren de treinen werden geannuleerd.

    GoedGisteren werden de treinen geannuleerd.

the verb comes second, so werden follows gisteren directly

  • FoutDe ramen wordt elke maand gelapt.

GoedDe ramen worden elke maand gelapt.

    plural subject, plural verb

  • FoutIk hoop dat mijn fiets wordt snel gerepareerd.

GoedIk hoop dat mijn fiets snel wordt gerepareerd.

in a subordinate clause, wordt joins the participle at the end

Quick check

  1. Choose wordt or worden: De nieuwe fietsenstalling bij het station ... volgend jaar geopend.
  2. Choose werd or werden: De fietsen van Joris en Mei ... gisteren gestolen.
  3. Fill in the gap so the sentence means that Yara bakes the cake: De verjaardagstaart wordt ... Yara gebakken.
  4. Fix the word order, keeping Vandaag at the start: Vandaag mijn salaris wordt overgemaakt.
Toon de antwoorden
  1. wordt: de nieuwe fietsenstalling is singular.
  2. werden: two bikes, past tense, so the plural werden.
  3. door: it introduces the doer.
  4. Vandaag wordt mijn salaris overgemaakt. The verb comes second, right after Vandaag.

Use it today

Open the next letter or email from your gemeente, bank or energy supplier, or read a short news item, and underline every wordt, worden, werd and werden. For each one, check whether it forms a passive with a past participle or simply means become. For each passive, find the participle and ask who does the action, and whether the text bothers to tell you.

Vragen van leerders

How do you make the passive in Dutch?

Use a form of worden plus a past participle, which usually goes at the end of the clause: De brief wordt verstuurd (The letter is being sent). To name the doer, add door: De brief wordt door Sanne verstuurd.

What is the difference between wordt and is in the Dutch passive?

Wordt plus a participle describes an action that is happening now, regularly or soon: Het huis wordt verkocht. Is plus a participle points to a finished action or its result: Het huis is verkocht, so the sale is done.

How do you say "was built" in Dutch?

Use werd for a singular subject or werden for a plural one, plus the participle: Het huis werd in 1920 gebouwd. In everyday conversation, Dutch speakers often use the perfect instead: Het huis is in 1920 gebouwd.
