The pattern
To say who something belongs to, use van plus a pronoun: Die fiets is van mij. To replace a noun, use die van mij or de mijne, with the same article as the noun.
- After is and zijn: van mij, van jou, van hem, van haar, van ons, van u, van jullie, van hen. These are object pronouns, the forms you also use after words like met and voor.
- To replace a noun in everyday speech: die van mij for nouns with de and for all plurals, dat van mij for nouns with het. This also works with names: die van Bas.
- The shorter stand-in: de mijne for nouns with de and for plurals, het mijne for nouns with het. The other forms follow the same pattern: de jouwe, de zijne, de hare, de onze, de uwe, de hunne.
- Jullie has no such form, so you say die van jullie.

Why it works this way
Mijn, jouw and zijn are like English "my", "your" and "his": they cannot stand alone, a noun has to follow (see possessive pronouns). English switches to a second set of words when the noun disappears. Everyday Dutch simply reuses van, the same word it uses with names. If you can say Deze fiets is van Daan, you can say Deze fiets is van mij.
De mijne works differently: the noun drops out, but its article stays behind to show which noun you mean. Compare these two answers:
- Is dat jouw boek? Nee, het mijne ligt thuis. (het boek)
- Is dat jouw tas? Nee, de mijne ligt thuis. (de tas)
Remember: de mijne behaves like de blauwe. Ask Welke jas? and you can answer De blauwe or De mijne: the noun disappears, the article stays, and the word gets an -e, just like adjectives used as nouns.
Both die van mij and de mijne are good standard Dutch. Die van mij is the most common in relaxed conversation, while de mijne is shorter and sounds a little more careful. After is, stay with van mij: Deze jas is de mijne is correct, but it sounds like a line from a costume drama. In speech you will often hear die is van hun; in writing, van hen is the standard form (more in hen, hun or ze).
