Verbs with a fixed preposition

Many Dutch verbs come with their own preposition (a small linking word such as op, aan or voor): you say wachten op for wait for, denken aan for think of and houden van for love. The preposition belongs to the verb, and it is often not the one English would choose. So learn each verb together with its preposition as one chunk, with a short example sentence.

The pattern

Many verbs link to their object (the person or thing they are about) with one particular preposition. Learn the verb and that preposition as one unit, because English is not a reliable guide.

  • Close to English: praten over (talk about), luisteren naar (listen to), beginnen met (start with).
  • Different from English: wachten op (wait for), denken aan (think of, remember), kijken naar (look at, watch), zorgen voor (take care of, arrange).
  • No preposition in English: houden van (love, really like).
  • With the "self" word zich: zich interesseren voor (be interested in). See reflexive verbs.
  • In a subordinate clause (a part starting with omdat, dat and so on), the verb goes to the end and the preposition group usually stays in front of it: omdat ik op de bus wacht.
  • For things and in questions, the preposition can team up with er or waar: Ik wacht erop. Waar wacht je op? See er plus a preposition and questions with a preposition.

Examples

Ik wacht al tien minuten op de bus.I have been waiting for the bus for ten minutes.
Denk je wel aan de afspraak bij de huisarts? Will you remember the appointment with the GP?
Daan houdt van fietsen, ook als het regent.Daan loves cycling, even when it rains.
Fatima zorgt sinds januari voor haar zieke moeder.Fatima has been taking care of her sick mother since January.
Priya praat met haar buurvrouw over het weer.Priya is talking to her neighbour about the weather.
Luister je wel naar me?Are you actually listening to me?
In de trein kijkt Mei graag naar de weilanden. On the train, Mei likes looking at the meadows.
We beginnen om negen uur met de vergadering. We start the meeting at nine o'clock.
Ahmed interesseert zich voor lokale politiek, omdat hij iets voor zijn wijk wil doen.Ahmed is interested in local politics because he wants to do something for his neighbourhood.

Why it works this way

In these pairs the preposition mostly works as glue between the verb and its object. Sometimes you can still see a picture: naar means towards, so with kijken naar and luisteren naar your eyes and ears go towards something. Often there is nothing to see: no picture of love explains the van in houden van. That is why guessing from English goes wrong so often. German speakers will recognise several pairs (German has "warten auf" and "denken an"), but even they should check each one.

The preposition can change the meaning completely, which shows how firmly it belongs to the verb:

  • Joris houdt van kippen. He loves chickens. Joris houdt kippen. He keeps chickens.
  • Ik denk aan mijn oma. My grandmother is on my mind. Hoe denk jij over thuiswerken? What is your opinion on working from home?

Remember: store each verb and its preposition as a pair, like shoes. Wachten on its own is fine (Ik wacht.), but as soon as you add the person or thing you are waiting for, the second shoe goes on: Ik wacht op de bus.

Watch out

  • 错误Ik wacht voor een antwoord van de gemeente.

正确Ik wacht op een antwoord van de gemeente.

    wait for is wachten op

  • 错误Emma zorgt van de kat van de buren.

正确Emma zorgt voor de kat van de buren.

take care of is zorgen voor

  • 错误Ik interesseer me in politiek.

    正确Ik interesseer me voor politiek.

the verb takes voor, although the adjective says geïnteresseerd in

  • 错误Ik denk vaak in mijn familie.

正确Ik denk vaak aan mijn familie.

Spanish and Arabic use a word for in here; Dutch uses aan

Quick check

  1. Choose: Yara staat bij het station. Ze wacht ... haar broer, want zijn trein heeft vertraging. (voor, op or naar)
  2. Choose: Lotte praat in de pauze graag met Carlos ... voetbal. (van, over or aan)
  3. Choose: Morgen is Bas jarig. Wie zorgt ... de taart? (van, voor or over)
  4. Fix the sentence by adding one word: Mei interesseert voor Nederlandse geschiedenis.
显示答案
  1. op (wachten op: she is waiting for him to arrive)
  2. over (the topic comes after praten over)
  3. voor (zorgen voor also means making sure something is there)
  4. Mei interesseert zich voor Nederlandse geschiedenis. (this verb needs zich)

Use it today

Today, write one true sentence about your own life for five of the pairs in this lesson, for example Ik kijk vanavond naar het journaal. Then say at least one of them out loud to a real person before bedtime: a colleague, a neighbour or your partner.

学习者常问的问题

How do you say "wait for" in Dutch?

Use wachten op, not wachten voor: "Ik wacht op de bus" means "I'm waiting for the bus". Without an object you simply say "Ik wacht".

What is the difference between denken aan and denken over in Dutch?

Denken aan means having someone or something on your mind or remembering it, as in "Ik denk aan je". Denken over is about your opinion, as in "Hoe denk jij over thuiswerken?"

How can I learn which preposition goes with a Dutch verb?

You cannot reliably work it out from English, so learn each verb with its preposition as one chunk and attach a short example, such as "zorgen voor je kinderen". Say the chunks out loud until the pair sounds natural together.
