Arriving at the Exam Center
On the day of the exam, arrive in good time for the start time in your letter from DUO. You show your ID, and sometimes you wait a while in the waiting room. A staff member tells you when you may enter the exam hall. In the hall the staff explain the rules, and after that you start the exam.
During the Exam
The inburgering exam is not one long test. It is a set of separate exams that you register for one by one in Mijn Inburgering, so you can take them on different days. At level A2 there are four language exams (reading, listening, writing and speaking) plus the Knowledge of Dutch Society exam (KNM). None of them is a conversation with an examiner. This is how each A2 exam works, according to DUO:
- Reading (65 minutes): On a computer. You read texts and answer questions about them.
- Listening (45 minutes): On a computer. You answer questions about short films and you listen to texts.
- Writing (40 minutes): With pen and paper. You get 4 assignments, for example writing a short letter or filling out a form.
- Speaking (35 minutes): On a computer. You watch short films and answer the questions out loud. You do not talk to an examiner.
- KNM (45 minutes): On a computer. You answer questions on themes such as living or work and income.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the inburgering exam take?
At A2, reading takes 65 minutes, listening 45 minutes, writing 40 minutes, speaking 35 minutes and KNM 45 minutes. You register for each exam separately, so you do not have to take them all on one day. The B1 and B2 exams (State Exam Nt2) have different durations.
Can I bring my own materials to the exam?
You do not need study materials for the exam. Do bring your valid ID. The main rules for A2 exams are in your letter of invitation, and DUO's exam regulations (examenreglement) contain all the rules. The exam is confidential: you may not take photos of it or copy the assignments.
What if I need to reschedule the exam?
In Mijn Inburgering you can change the date or the location of your exam until 1 week before the exam. You can also cancel the exam. If you cancel until 1 week before the exam, you get a refund.
