Veel, weinig, een paar, een beetje

The everyday Dutch word for both "many" and "much" is veel, and weinig covers both "few" and "little". For small amounts, say een paar (a few) with things you count and een beetje (a little) with things you don't. Genoeg (enough) can go before or after the noun: genoeg tijd or tijd genoeg.

The pattern

Veel (a lot of) and weinig (not much, few) go with plural nouns and with uncountable nouns, the things you measure instead of count, like water or tijd. For small amounts, use een paar (a few) with plural nouns and een beetje (a little) with uncountable nouns.

  • veel and weinig: veel mensen, veel geld, weinig auto's, weinig tijd.
  • een paar + plural noun: een paar dagen. Words that stay singular after a number do so here too: een paar jaar, een paar euro.
  • With things that come in twos, een paar usually means a pair: een paar schoenen. After a number, paar usually stays singular: twee paar sokken.
  • een beetje + uncountable noun: een beetje suiker, een beetje hulp (more in countable and uncountable nouns).
  • genoeg before or after the noun: genoeg stoelen or stoelen genoeg. Both are correct; before the noun is the safe default.
  • The verb follows the noun: er zijn veel mensen, er is weinig tijd.

Examples

Er zijn vandaag veel mensen in de trein. There are a lot of people on the train today.
Fatima heeft deze week weinig tijd.Fatima doesn't have much time this week.
Daan heeft weinig vrienden in Utrecht.Daan has few friends in Utrecht.
Daan heeft een paar vrienden in Utrecht.Daan has a few friends in Utrecht.
Priya is een paar dagen ziek geweest.Priya was ill for a few days.
Ahmed zoekt een paar schoenen voor de bruiloft.Ahmed is looking for a pair of shoes for the wedding.
Wil je een beetje suiker in je thee?Would you like a little sugar in your tea?
Ik spreek een beetje Nederlands.I speak a little Dutch.
Hebben we genoeg melk voor morgen?Do we have enough milk for tomorrow?
Geen haast, we hebben tijd genoeg. No rush, we have enough time.

Why it works this way

English sorts amounts by the kind of noun: "many" and "few" for things you count, "much" and "little" for things you don't. Dutch skips that split for the big words. Veel and weinig are one volume knob that fits both kinds of noun: veel fietsen, veel regen. The words for "more" and "less" follow the same idea: meer is "more", and minder is both "less" and "fewer" (see irregular comparison).

For small amounts, Dutch does split, just like English: "a few friends" is een paar vrienden, "a little sugar" is een beetje suiker. Without "a", English "few" and "little" tend to sound negative, and so does weinig: weinig vrienden means not many. Een paar and een beetje, like "a few" and "a little", sound positive.

If your language changes the word for "many", like German "viele" or Spanish "muchos", keep everyday Dutch simple: veel mensen, weinig mensen, no -e. You will see vele in formal writing, as in vele jaren.

Remember: if you could count it on your fingers, use een paar. If you pour, scoop or spread it, use een beetje.

Watch out

  • FalschJoris heeft veel van werk.

    RichtigJoris heeft veel werk.

no van: English "a lot of" is just veel

  • FalschIk koop een beetje appels.

    RichtigIk koop een paar appels.

you count apples, so use een paar

  • FalschEen paar collega's is ziek.

    RichtigEen paar collega's zijn ziek.

collega's is plural, so the verb is plural

  • FalschKaartjes? Ik heb nog een paar.

RichtigKaartjes? Ik heb er nog een paar.

when you leave out the noun, Dutch needs er

  • FalschIk heb teveel gegeten.

    RichtigIk heb te veel gegeten.

write te veel as two words

Quick check

  1. Choose een paar or een beetje: Mag ik ... melk in mijn thee?
  2. Choose veel or weinig: Het is erg druk op het station. Er staan ... mensen op het perron.
  3. Fill in is or zijn: Er ... nog een paar broodjes in de keuken.
  4. Which is correct: We hebben genoeg stoelen, We hebben stoelen genoeg, or both?
Antworten zeigen
  1. een beetje: melk is uncountable.
  2. veel: druk means busy, so there are a lot of people.
  3. zijn: broodjes is plural, whatever the een in een paar suggests.
  4. Both: genoeg can go before or after the noun.

Use it today

When a colleague or neighbour leaves for the weekend, wish them veel plezier. Then describe your week to someone in one sentence with veel, weinig and een paar, for example: Ik heb deze week veel werk en weinig tijd, maar ook een paar leuke afspraken.

Fragen von Lernenden

What is the difference between weinig and een paar in Dutch?

Weinig means few or little and tends to sound negative, like "not many". Een paar means a few and sounds positive. Ik heb weinig vrienden hier is a complaint, while Ik heb een paar vrienden hier is good news.

Does een paar mean a few or a pair in Dutch?

It can mean both. Een paar dagen means a few days, but with things that come in twos, like shoes, socks or gloves, een paar usually means a pair: een paar schoenen.

Both orders are correct: genoeg tijd and tijd genoeg both mean enough time. Putting genoeg before the noun is the safe default.
