The pattern
Never learn a noun on its own: learn de fiets and het huis, not fiets and huis. The article is part of the word.
- Write every new noun with its article: de vergadering, het formulier, never just formulier.
- Use two colours, for example blue for de-words and red for het-words. Later you will remember "the red one" even when your ear hesitates.
- Review with spaced flashcards: the English word on the front, the Dutch noun with its article on the back. Spaced means the gaps grow (tomorrow, in three days, next week), so each card comes back just before you forget it.
- Group nouns by the patterns you know: all plurals (more than one) take de; a singular diminutive (a small form with -je, -tje, -pje, -etje or -kje) takes het, so het kopje, but de kopjes; nouns made with -ing or -heid take de (de woning, de gezondheid); and a compound (one word built from two) takes the article of its last part. More clues: het-words and de-words.
- Read and listen every day, so the right article starts to sound right.

Why it works this way
Dutch once had three genders (grammatical classes of nouns, nothing to do with men and women). Over time two of them merged into the de-words, and the third became the het-words. So for most nouns the article is a leftover from history, not something you can work out from the meaning. That is why het meisje takes het: the word is a diminutive in form, and singular diminutives take het, even when they refer to a person.
What you can build is a feeling. Your brain stores word pairs it meets often as chunks. After you have heard het weer a hundred times in chats about rain, de weer simply sounds off. That feeling grows from input, so every podcast, news item and chat with the neighbours counts.
If you have no clue at all, guess de: roughly two out of three nouns are de-words, and every plural takes de.
Relax about mistakes, too. Say de station at the ticket desk and you will still get your ticket. A few nouns change meaning with the article, like het pad (the path) and de pad (the toad), but context almost always saves you.
Remember: in your head, de fiets is one word with a space in the middle. You would never learn half a word.
