The pattern
Add -je to most nouns, unless the last sound asks for -tje, -pje, -etje or -kje. In the singular, the result always takes het.
- -je after most consonants, such as k, s or t: boek, boekje; huis, huisje; kat, katje.
- -tje after a vowel. A single final a, o or u is written double: oma, omaatje; auto, autootje; paraplu, parapluutje. A final i usually becomes ie (taxi, taxietje). A final y after a consonant gets an apostrophe (baby, baby'tje), while after a vowel it simply takes -tje (spray, spraytje). Two vowels stay as they are (thee, theetje).
- -tje after l, n, r or w when the vowel before is long, a diphthong (two vowels in one sound, like ui or ou), or in an unstressed syllable (one said without extra force, like the -el in tafel): stoeltje, deurtje, vrouwtje, tafeltje.
- -pje after m in the same situations: boompje, bezempje.
- -etje after a short stressed vowel plus l, m, n, ng or r. Double the l, m, n or r, but leave ng as it is: balletje, kammetje, mannetje, ringetje.
- -kje after unstressed -ing when the syllable just before it is stressed: koninkje, kettinkje. Otherwise -ing usually takes -etje: wandeling, wandelingetje.
- The plural adds -s and, like every plural, takes de: de stoeltjes, de balletjes.

Why it works this way
The ending follows your mouth. Say boomtje quickly: your lips are already closed for the m, so a p slips in on its own, and Dutch simply writes what you hear: boompje. In koning the back of your tongue is already in place for a k sound, so koningtje turns into koninkje.
A short stressed vowel before l, m, n, ng or r gets the fuller ending -etje, and a doubled l, m, n or r keeps that vowel short, just as in the plural ballen (see doubling consonants). Compare:
- man, mannetje and maan, maantje (short or long vowel)
- kam, kammetje and boom, boompje (short or long vowel)
- bal, balletje and tafel, tafeltje (stressed or unstressed, see word stress)
- ring, ringetje and koning, koninkje (stressed or unstressed)
Remember: with l, m, n, ng or r at the end, a short stressed vowel gets the long ending. Bal gets -etje, while stoel and tafel only get -tje.
As for het: the diminutive ending decides the article, not the original noun, so de man becomes het mannetje. If you speak German, this works just like -chen.
A few common words go their own way. Some short words lengthen the vowel: glas, glaasje; schip, scheepje. Jongen becomes jongetje. After lm and rm you also get -pje: filmpje, armpje. And some words ending in another consonant take -etje: vlag, vlaggetje; brug, bruggetje. What all these small forms actually mean is the topic of the next lesson.
Watch out
Notde stoeltje
Sayhet stoeltje
every singular diminutive takes het, even if the noun takes de
Noteen kleine huisje
Sayeen klein huisje
a het word after een gets no -e on the adjective
Nothet autotje
Sayhet autootje
the final o of auto is doubled before -tje
Nothet boomtje
Sayhet boompje
after a long vowel plus m, the ending is -pje
Nothet baltje
Sayhet balletje
short stressed vowel plus l: double it and add -etje
Quick check
- Write the diminutive with its article: de boom
- Choose the right word: Emma tekent een (stertje / sterretje) op de kaart.
- Fix the sentence, keeping tafeltje: Ik heb mijn telefoon op de tafeltje gelegd.
- Fill in the plural diminutive of auto: Bas speelt met drie ... op de vloer.
Show the answers
- het boompje (long vowel plus m gives -pje, and a singular diminutive always takes het)
- sterretje (short stressed vowel plus r: double the r and add -etje)
- Ik heb mijn telefoon op het tafeltje gelegd. (a singular diminutive is a het word)
- autootjes (double the final o, add -tje, then -s for the plural)
