If you learn Dutch with us, you have met Luuk: our fluffy blue mascot with the orange beak. But Luuk is first of all a real and very popular Dutch boy name, and it contains one of the sounds English speakers find hardest: the Dutch uu.
How do you pronounce Luuk?
Luuk does not sound like "Luke". Say "ee" as in "see", keep your tongue there, and round your lips as if you want to whistle: that is the Dutch uu, the same sound as the French u in tu or the German ü. Now put an L before it and a k after it: LUUK. Practise with de muur (the wall) and het vuur (the fire).
What does Luuk mean?
According to the Meertens Instituut, which keeps the Dutch first name database, Luuk is a form of Lucas. Lucas is usually explained as coming from Latin Lucanus: "from Lucania", a region in the south of Italy. Lucas is the evangelist Luke in the Bible, the patron saint of doctors and painters. The Dutch did what they always do with saint's names: they kept one strong syllable and made it their own.
How popular is Luuk?
Luuk is a familiar name in every Dutch school and office. Its long form Lucas and the Italian-style Luca are both in the 2025 top 10 of Dutch boy names (Luca at number 3 with 702 babies), according to the SVB.
Make it cute: Luukje
Dutch people love the diminutive, the small and sweet form of a word. It works on names too: Luuk becomes Luukje. A name that ends in a consonant like k, p, s or t gets just -je, like het boek (book) becomes het boekje. Every diminutive is a het-word, even for people: het kleine Meesje.
