Sem is three letters, one syllable and very Dutch. You will hear it in every Dutch primary school, and in 2025 it was one of the five most popular boy names in the Netherlands. The fun part is where it comes from, because the obvious answer is probably wrong.
How do you pronounce Sem?
Just say SEM, like the start of "seminar". The Dutch e in a closed syllable is short and clear, the same sound as in bed or met. Easy win.
What does Sem mean?
In the Bible, Sem (Shem in English) is one of the sons of Noah, and it is tempting to think Dutch parents pick it for that reason, especially now that Noah is the number 1 boy name. But the Meertens Instituut, which keeps the Dutch first name database, says the Bible was probably not the inspiration. Sem is more likely a variant of the old name Sjamme (compare Semke and Semme) or a short form of Samuel.

Sem was the number 4 boy name in the Netherlands in 2025, after Noah, Liam and Luca, according to the SVB baby name list.
Make it cute: Semmetje
Dutch people love the diminutive, the small and sweet form of a word. It works on names too: Sem becomes Semmetje. A short vowel followed by l, m, n, ng or r doubles the consonant and gets -etje, like de kam (comb) becomes het kammetje. That is why it is Semmetje and not Semtje.
