Er is and er zijn: there is, there are

To say there is or there are in Dutch, use er is for one thing or an amount you cannot count, and er zijn for two or more: Er is geen melk, Er zijn veel mensen. It brings something new into the conversation, and when a real object is in a real place, Dutch often swaps zijn for staan, liggen, zitten or hangen: Er ligt een brief op tafel.

The pattern

Er plus a verb introduces something new: er is for one thing or an uncountable amount, er zijn for more. The verb agrees with the thing named after it, not with er.

  • One thing, or an amount you cannot count: Er is een feestje. Er is veel verkeer.
  • Two or more: Er zijn twee supermarkten in ons dorp. So Er is veel werk, but Er zijn veel mensen (more in countable and uncountable nouns).
  • The new thing usually starts with een, geen, a number, veel or a word like iets or iemand, or has no article at all (Er is koffie).
  • If the listener already knows the thing (de, het, mijn, a name), you normally start with it instead: De melk staat in de koelkast.

For a real object in a real place, Dutch speakers usually name its position:

  • staan: standing upright, like a bottle, a bike or a plant
  • liggen: lying flat, like a letter, keys or a phone
  • zitten: inside something, like money in a wallet or apples in a bag
  • hangen: hanging, like a coat, a lamp or a picture

The verb still agrees: Er ligt een sleutel, Er liggen twee sleutels. This is a strong tendency, not a law. Er is een brief op tafel is not wrong, just flat, and some choices are habit: plates on a set table staan, even though they are flat.

Examples

Er is geen melk meer. There is no milk left.
Er zijn veel mensen op het station. There are a lot of people at the station.
Er ligt een brief op tafel. There is a letter on the table.
Er liggen twee brieven op tafel. There are two letters on the table.
Er staat een fiets voor de deur. There is a bike outside the door.
Er zit geen geld in mijn portemonnee. There is no money in my wallet.
Er hangt een jas aan de kapstok. There is a coat on the coat rack.
Is er een apotheek in de buurt? Is there a pharmacy nearby?
Vanavond is er een feestje bij Sanne. There is a party at Sanne's tonight.
De melk staat in de koelkast. The milk is in the fridge.

Why it works this way

Dutch, like English, likes to put new information later in the sentence. Een man staat voor de deur is also possible, but the usual way to introduce the man as someone new is to let er take the first seat. The verb stays in second place (see verb second), and the new thing arrives after it: Er staat een man voor de deur. This is one of the four jobs of er. In this job er does not point to a place; you add the place yourself.

Because er is only a placeholder, the real subject is the noun after the verb. That is why the verb looks ahead to agree.

When a time word starts the sentence, the verb still comes second and er follows it: Morgen is er een markt. In a yes or no question, the verb comes first and er follows it: Is er nog koffie? If you start with the place itself, er is often left out: Op tafel ligt een brief.

Remember: er is the doorbell, not the guest. The verb looks past it to see who walks in: one guest, is; a crowd, zijn.

Watch out

  • FalschEr is veel mensen in de trein.

RichtigEr zijn veel mensen in de trein.

the verb agrees with veel mensen, so English "there's" does not carry over

  • FalschMorgen er is een markt op het plein.

RichtigMorgen is er een markt op het plein.

the verb comes second, so er follows it

  • FalschHet geeft een supermarkt in mijn straat.

RichtigEr is een supermarkt in mijn straat.

German "es gibt" has no word-for-word copy in Dutch

  • FalschIk ga naar de supermarkt omdat er is geen melk meer.

RichtigIk ga naar de supermarkt omdat er geen melk meer is.

after omdat the verb goes to the end

Quick check

  1. Choose is or zijn: Er ... veel toeristen in Amsterdam.
  2. Choose is or zijn: Er ... geen brood meer.
  3. Choose ligt or hangt: Er ... een lamp boven de tafel.
  4. Fix the word order and keep Zaterdag at the start: Zaterdag er is een barbecue bij Daan.
Antworten zeigen
  1. zijn: veel toeristen is plural.
  2. is: brood is an uncountable amount here, so the verb is singular.
  3. hangt: a lamp above a table hangs.
  4. Zaterdag is er een barbecue bij Daan. The verb stays in second place.

Use it today

Open your fridge and say three sentences out loud: one with er staat, one with er ligt and one with er is geen, for example Er is geen boter meer.

Fragen von Lernenden

How do you say there is and there are in Dutch?

Use er is for one thing or an uncountable amount (Er is geen melk) and er zijn for two or more (Er zijn veel mensen). The verb agrees with the noun that follows, not with er.

Why do Dutch people say er ligt or er staat instead of er is?

When an object is physically somewhere, Dutch usually names its position: standing (staan), lying (liggen), inside something (zitten) or hanging (hangen). Er is is not wrong there, but it sounds flatter and less natural.

What is the difference between het is and er is in Dutch?

Het is means it is, as in Het is koud or Het is mijn fiets. Er is means there is and introduces something new, as in Er is koffie.
