Superlatives: de grootste, het grootst

To say "the biggest" or "the cheapest" in Dutch, you add -st to the adjective: groot becomes grootst. Before a noun you usually put de or het in front and add -e: de grootste stad, het mooiste huis. After a verb you usually use het plus the form without -e: Wie rent het snelst?

This form is called the superlative (in Dutch: de overtreffende trap). It picks out the top of a group: the cheapest coffee, the busiest train, the coldest month. It is one step up from the comparative, where groot becomes groter.

The pattern

Add -st to the adjective. Before a noun, add -e and usually de or het (de grootste stad); after a verb, usually het plus the bare form without -e (Deze is het grootst).

  • Most adjectives simply add -st: klein, kleinst; snel, snelst; duur, duurst; gezellig, gezelligst.
  • The adjective keeps its spelling, because -st starts with a consonant and the syllable stays closed: groot, grootst (compare groter); dik, dikst (compare dikker); lief, liefst. The same goes with -e: de grootste, de dikste.
  • Adjectives that end in -s add only -t: vies, viest; wijs, wijst.
  • Before a noun, the superlative gets -e. Usually you use the noun's article: de grootste stad, het mooiste huis, de duurste fietsen. A possessive replaces the article: haar dikste trui. Without a possessive, keep the article, even if your language drops it (Arabic says "biggest city" with none).
  • After a verb, the usual form is het plus the bare form: Deze is het grootst, Wie rent het snelst?
  • Some adjectives use meest instead (see Meer and meest), and goed becomes best (see Goed, beter, best).

Examples

Amsterdam is de grootste stad van Nederland.Amsterdam is the biggest city in the Netherlands.
Fatima woont in het mooiste huis van de straat.Fatima lives in the most beautiful house on the street.
Dit is de goedkoopste koffie van de supermarkt. This is the cheapest coffee in the supermarket.
Priya heeft de kleinste kamer van het huis.Priya has the smallest room in the house.
Utrecht Centraal is het drukste station van Nederland.Utrecht Centraal is the busiest station in the Netherlands.
Het station is om acht uur het drukst. The station is busiest at eight o'clock.
Wie rent het snelst?Who runs the fastest?
Na het voetballen zijn de schoenen van Carlos het viest. After football, Carlos's shoes are the dirtiest.
In januari is het meestal het koudst. It is usually coldest in January.

Why it works this way

Before a noun, a superlative is an ordinary adjective after de or het, so it gets -e, just like de grote stad (see adjective endings). A superlative picks out one particular winner, so it usually comes with de, het or a possessive like mijn, and takes -e. That is why you say een mooi huis but het mooiste huis and mijn mooiste huis.

After a verb, het snelst names no thing. It tells you how much: to the top degree. So it stays het, even with a plural subject: De treinen zijn om acht uur het drukst.

Compare the two station sentences. Utrecht Centraal is het drukste station ranks one station against other stations, so there is a noun. Het station is om acht uur het drukst compares the station with itself at other times. No noun fits, so you use het drukst.

Remember: "the biggest one" is a thing, so it gets de or het and -e. "Biggest of all" is a degree, so it gets het and no ending.

With zijn, when you compare things in a group, both work: Deze tas is het grootst and Deze tas is de grootste (the biggest one). After a verb you will also hear het snelste with -e. That is accepted, but the bare form is the usual choice in writing.

Watch out

  • Fouthet mooist huis

    Goedhet mooiste huis

before a noun the superlative gets -e, also after het

  • FoutHet station is om acht uur drukst.

GoedHet station is om acht uur het drukst.

English can drop "the" here, Dutch needs het

  • FoutWie rent de snelste?

    GoedWie rent het snelst?

after an action verb no noun fits, so use het

  • Foutde grotste stad

    Goedde grootste stad

-st starts with a consonant, so the long vowel stays written double

  • Foutde viesste wc

    Goedde vieste wc

an adjective ending in -s adds only -t

Quick check

  1. Fill in the superlative of mooi: Dit is de ... fiets van de hele winkel.
  2. Choose: Bas fietst (de snelste / het snelst) van iedereen op kantoor.
  3. Fix the sentence: Het vriest, dus Mei draagt haar dikkste trui.
  4. Fill in the superlative of vies: Daan heeft de ... auto van de hele straat.
Toon de antwoorden
  1. mooiste (before a noun after de: -st plus -e)
  2. het snelst (after the verb fietst no noun fits)
  3. Het vriest, dus Mei draagt haar dikste trui. (no doubled consonant before -st)
  4. vieste (vies ends in -s, so add only -t, then -e before the noun)

Use it today

In the supermarket, find the cheapest and the most expensive coffee and say it to yourself: Dit is de goedkoopste koffie, en dit is de duurste. Then ask a colleague one question with het, like Welke supermarkt is hier het goedkoopst?

Vragen van leerders

How do you make the superlative in Dutch?

Add -st to the adjective: groot becomes grootst and snel becomes snelst. Before a noun you add -e and usually de or het (de grootste stad), or a possessive (haar dikste trui); after a verb you usually use het and the bare form (Wie rent het snelst?).

What is the difference between de grootste and het grootst in Dutch?

De grootste (or het grootste) goes with a noun, said or understood, like de grootste stad or het grootste huis. Het grootst describes a degree after a verb, as in Het station is om acht uur het drukst; you will also hear het drukste there, which is accepted, but the form without -e is usual in writing.

Is it viesst or viest in Dutch?

It is viest. Adjectives that end in -s add only -t in the superlative, so vies becomes viest and wijs becomes wijst, and before a noun you add -e: de vieste wc.
