Zou and zouden: would

Zou (plural zouden) is how Dutch says "would". You use it to ask politely (Zou je me kunnen helpen?), to imagine things that are not real (Als ik rijk was, zou ik minder werken), to give advice (Ik zou dat niet doen) and, in the news, to report claims nobody has confirmed. Just like "would" in English, it comes with an infinitive (the basic form of a verb, such as werken), and Dutch puts that infinitive at the end of the clause.

The pattern

Zou is the past tense of zullen, and it means "would". Use zou, or zouden with a plural subject, plus an infinitive at the end of the clause.

  • Forms: ik, jij, u, hij, zij zou; wij, jullie, zij zouden. In modern Dutch, jij and u get no extra -t.
  • Word order: in a statement, zou is the second element and the infinitive goes last. In a question, zou comes first. In a subordinate clause, both verbs go to the end: Je zei dat je zou bellen. See the verb bracket.
  • Polite wishes and requests: Ik zou graag ... (you can add willen: Ik zou graag een kamer willen reserveren) and Zou je ... kunnen ...?
  • Hypothetical (imagined) situations: als with the simple past, then zou in the main clause. Als ik meer tijd zou hebben is also correct, just heavier. For "would have", see the unreal past.
  • Advice: Ik zou ... means "if I were you". Je zou ... moeten means "you should".
  • News: zou marks a claim, not a fact. For the past, add a perfect infinitive (past participle plus hebben or zijn). If you know German, this is "soll". Dutch moet here would mean "must have".

Examples

Ik zou graag een kamer voor twee nachten reserveren.I would like to book a room for two nights.
Zou je de deur dicht kunnen doen? Het tocht.Could you close the door? There's a draught.
Zou u mij even met dit formulier kunnen helpen?Could you help me with this form for a moment?
Als ik meer tijd had, zou ik vaker sporten. If I had more time, I would exercise more often.
Als we een auto hadden, zouden we niet elke dag met de trein gaan.If we had a car, we wouldn't take the train every day.
Ik zou die fiets niet kopen, want hij is veel te duur.I wouldn't buy that bike, because it's far too expensive.
Je zou eens met de buren over het lawaai moeten praten. You should talk to the neighbours about the noise.
Je zei toch dat je om acht uur zou komen? You said you would come at eight, didn't you?
De minister zou het geweten hebben. The minister is said to have known.
Volgens omwonenden zou de brand in de keuken zijn begonnen.According to local residents, the fire reportedly started in the kitchen.

Why it works this way

Think of zou as _zullen_ taking one step back. A past form creates distance, and Dutch uses that distance in four ways. It can step back in time (je zei dat je zou komen) or away from reality (als ik tijd had). It can step away from bluntness: Zou je ...? sounds softer than Kun je ...?. And it can step away from responsibility: a journalist who writes zou is saying "others claim this, I can't confirm it yet".

English "would" works in much the same way, which is good news for you. One difference: English also uses "would" for past habits ("every Sunday we would visit Grandma"). Dutch uses the simple past for that: Elke zondag gingen we bij oma langs.

Remember: zou is zullen one step back, from now, from reality, from bluntness or from the facts.

Watch out

  • FoutWij zou graag een afspraak maken

GoedWij zouden graag een afspraak maken

with wij, jullie and zij it is zouden

  • FoutIk zou graag reserveren een tafel voor vier

GoedIk zou graag een tafel voor vier reserveren

the infinitive goes to the end, unlike English

  • FoutAls het niet regende, we zouden gaan fietsen

GoedAls het niet regende, zouden we gaan fietsen

after an als-clause, the main clause starts with its verb

  • FoutIk zou hebben gekomen, maar de trein viel uit

GoedIk zou zijn gekomen, maar de trein viel uit

komen takes zijn, also after zou

Quick check

  1. Fill in zou or zouden: Mei en Joris ... graag een tafel voor zes personen reserveren.
  2. Fix the word order: Als ik in Utrecht woonde, ik zou elke dag naar mijn werk fietsen.
  3. Ahmed has had a headache for a week and asks: Wat zou jij doen? Choose zal or zou: Ik ... eerst even de huisarts bellen.
  4. A news report about a rumour nobody has confirmed. Choose zullen or zouden: De twee ministers ... al maanden ruzie hebben.
Toon de antwoorden
  1. zouden: Mei en Joris is a plural subject.
  2. Als ik in Utrecht woonde, zou ik elke dag naar mijn werk fietsen. After a subordinate clause at the start, the main clause starts with its verb.
  3. zou: you are giving advice. Ik zal ... would announce your own plan.
  4. zouden: news style for an unconfirmed claim, with a plural subject.

Use it today

Next time you phone your GP's practice, a hotel or the gemeente, open with Ik zou graag ... and ask one thing with Zou u ... kunnen ...?. Write both sentences down before you dial.

Vragen van leerders

How do you say "I would like" in Dutch?

Say "Ik zou graag" with the infinitive at the end, as in "Ik zou graag een kamer reserveren". You can add "willen" ("Ik zou graag een kamer willen reserveren"), and "Ik wil graag" is also polite and common.

What does zou mean in Dutch news reports?

In the news, zou marks a claim that has not been confirmed. "De minister zou het geweten hebben" means the minister is said to have known, not that the journalist knows it for a fact.

What is the difference between zal and zou in Dutch?

Zal (from zullen) is for promises, suggestions and assumptions about real situations. Zou is its past tense and adds distance: politeness, imagined situations, advice or unconfirmed claims. "Ik zal je helpen" is a promise, while "Ik zou je helpen als ik tijd had" is only imagined.
