Adjectives used as nouns

Dutch can leave out a noun and let the adjective, the describing word, do its job. De oude means the old one, het mooie is dat ... means the nice thing is that ..., and de rijken means rich people. Where English needs an extra word like one, people or thing, Dutch usually manages with just the article (de or het) and the adjective with -e.

The pattern

Keep the article, drop the noun, and give the adjective its -e. The adjective now works as a noun: de oude, de rijken, het mooie.

  • The ... one. If the noun is clear from the context, use its article: de oude (the old one, about a fiets), het grote (the big one, about a huis). For things, the plural looks the same: de zwarte (the black ones, about schoenen).
  • People. With no noun in the context, de or een plus an adjective usually means a person: de zieke (the sick person), een bekende (someone you know). For people in general, add -n: de rijken (rich people), de doven (deaf people), ouderen (older people, built on ouder).
  • An abstract idea. Het plus an adjective means the ... thing or the ... part: het mooie is dat ... (the nice thing is that ...), het nieuwe aan dit plan (what is new about this plan). The -st form works too: het leukste (the most fun part).
  • The usual spelling changes apply: doof, dove, doven.

Examples

Mijn fiets is de oude naast de deur.My bike is the old one next to the door.
Sanne wil het kleine huis, maar Daan wil het grote.Sanne wants the small house, but Daan wants the big one.
Welke schoenen trek je aan? De zwarte, denk ik.Which shoes are you wearing? The black ones, I think.
De huisarts ziet in de winter veel zieken. The GP sees a lot of sick people in winter.
Volgens Ahmed moeten de rijken meer belasting betalen.According to Ahmed, rich people should pay more tax.
De gemeente organiseert elke week een koffieochtend voor ouderen. The municipality organises a coffee morning for older people every week.
Het mooie is dat ik op de fiets naar mijn werk kan.The nice thing is that I can cycle to work.
Priya vraagt wat het nieuwe aan dit plan is.Priya asks what is new about this plan.
Het vervelende is dat de trein vandaag weer vertraging heeft. The annoying thing is that the train is delayed again today.

Why it works this way

English needs a support word: the old one, rich people, the annoying thing. Dutch can do without it, because the article and the -e ending already show that a noun is meant. Think of de oude as de oude fiets with fiets left out because everyone can see the bike. The article belongs to that invisible noun, so a house becomes het grote and a bike stays de oude.

When the adjective means people in general, it behaves like a full noun: it gets a plural -n and can follow een or veel, or stand alone: een zieke, veel zieken, ouderen. English the rich has no plural ending; Dutch de rijken does, and takes a plural verb: de rijken betalen. Compare:

  • Welke tomaten wil je? De rijpe. (tomatoes on the table: no -n)
  • In deze stad hebben de armen het moeilijk. (poor people in general: -n)

The abstract use takes het and has no plural. Add aan to say what it is about: het leuke aan Utrecht (in speech you also hear van). It is not the same as iets nieuws (something new), which takes -s: see iets leuks, niets nieuws.

Remember: English adds a word, Dutch adds an ending. One, people or thing becomes the article plus -e, with an extra -n for people in general.

Watch out

  • 错误Ik neem de blauwe één.

    正确Ik neem de blauwe.

no word for one after the adjective

  • 错误De rijke betalen meer belasting.

    正确De rijken betalen meer belasting.

rich people in general: add -n

  • 错误Het leuk aan dit werk is de vrijheid.

正确Het leuke aan dit werk is de vrijheid.

    the adjective needs -e

  • 错误De mooie is dat het gratis is.

    an abstract idea takes het

Quick check

  1. Choose de or het: Ik heb twee boeken geleend. Ik begin met ... dikke.
  2. Fill in doof as a noun: De gemeente maakt haar website ook geschikt voor blinden en ...
  3. Choose the correct answer to Welke jas is van Joris? (a) De lange één. (b) De lange. (c) De langen.
  4. Choose de or het: ... leuke aan mijn werk is dat ik veel buiten ben.
显示答案
  1. het: you leave out boek, and it is het boek.
  2. doven: people in general get -n, and f changes to v as in dove.
  3. (b) De lange. Dutch has no word for one after the adjective, and a coat is a thing, so no -n.
  4. Het: an abstract idea takes het.

Use it today

Tell a colleague or neighbour one thing you like about living in the Netherlands, starting with Het leuke aan ... is dat ..., and one thing that annoys you, starting with Het vervelende is dat .... The weather is always a safe choice.

学习者常问的问题

How do you say "the rich" or "the poor" in Dutch?

Use de plus the adjective with the ending -en: de rijken and de armen. Because it is a plural noun, the verb is plural too: De rijken betalen meer belasting.

How do you say "the nice thing is that" in Dutch?

Say het mooie is dat or het leuke is dat, followed by a clause with the verb at the end: Het mooie is dat ik thuis kan werken. You do not need a separate word for thing.

How do you say "the blue one" in Dutch?

Use the article of the noun you mean plus the adjective with -e, and leave out the word for one: Welke jas? De blauwe. For a het-word it becomes het blauwe, as in Welk shirt? Het blauwe.
