The pattern
Use in for inside, op for on a surface, aan for hanging on something and bij for near or at someone's place. Many places also take a fixed preposition (a small word that shows position), so learn those by heart.
- in: inside a space, a town or a country: in de kast (in the cupboard), in Utrecht, in Nederland.
- op: on a surface: op tafel or op de tafel, op de grond (on the floor). Also many fixed places: op school, op het werk, op het station.
- aan: hanging on something, usually a wall or a hook: aan de muur, aan de kapstok (on the coat rack). Also fixed: aan tafel (sitting at the table).
- bij: near something, or at a person's home or practice: bij de deur, bij mijn ouders, bij de huisarts.
- These words say where something is. Going to a place often needs other words: Naar, uit, door, langs, over.
Examples
| De melk staat in de koelkast. | The milk is in the fridge. |
| Priya woont in Utrecht. | Priya lives in Utrecht. |
| Mijn sleutels liggen op tafel. | My keys are on the table. |
| Joris is op het werk. | Joris is at work. |
| Mei is op het station. | Mei is at the station. |
| De kalender hangt aan de muur. | The calendar is hanging on the wall. |
| We zitten aan tafel. | We are sitting at the table. |
| Ahmed staat bij de deur. | Ahmed is standing by the door. |
| Lotte slaapt vanavond bij haar ouders. | Lotte is sleeping at her parents' place tonight. |
Why it works this way
Picture the object and ask how it is held. Walls around it: in. A surface it rests on: op. A nail or hook it hangs from: aan. Just close by: bij. A small change in the picture changes the word:
- De kat zit op tafel. The cat is on top of the table.
- We zitten aan tafel. We are at the table, ready to eat.
- Yara is in de supermarkt. Yara is inside the shop.
- Yara wacht bij de supermarkt. Yara is waiting near the shop, probably outside.
The fixed places are habit, not logic. Dutch says op school, op het werk, op kantoor (at the office) and op het station, but in de supermarkt and in het ziekenhuis. No rule predicts them, so learn each place with its word as a chunk (a group of words you store as one unit). Fixed prepositional phrases has more.
English "at" has no single Dutch partner: it becomes op school, aan tafel or bij de huisarts. And "on the train" is in de trein, because you sit inside it (Met de trein, op de fiets, te voet). German helps a little: bij works like "bei" and aan de muur is "an der Wand", but "in der Schule" is op school. Spanish "en" covers in, on and at, so Spanish speakers often overuse in.
Remember: in is a box, op is a shelf, aan is a hook, bij is a neighbour.
Watch out
错误De klok hangt op de muur.
正确De klok hangt aan de muur.
something that hangs takes aan
错误Daan is in school.
正确Daan is op school.
school is a fixed op place
错误Ik ben in de huisarts.
正确Ik ben bij de huisarts.
at someone's practice: bij, you are not inside the doctor
错误Mijn telefoon ligt in de tafel.
正确Mijn telefoon ligt op de tafel.
it lies on the surface, not inside
Quick check
- Choose in or op: Fatima woont ... Leiden.
- Fill in in, op, aan or bij: Bas werkt vandaag niet thuis, maar ... kantoor.
- Choose aan or op: De spiegel hangt ... de muur.
- Fix the sentence: Carlos is vandaag in de tandarts.
显示答案
- in: Leiden is a city, so in.
- op: op kantoor is a fixed chunk, like op school.
- aan: a mirror hangs on the wall.
- Carlos is vandaag bij de tandarts. (at someone's practice: bij)
Use it today
Walk through your home and say four sentences out loud: something in a cupboard, something on the table, something on the wall and someone or something by the door. Then tell a friend where you are tonight, for example Vanavond ben ik bij Sanne.
