Ja, nee, jawel and toch wel

To agree with a negative question such as Kom je niet? (Aren't you coming?), answer nee: Nee, ik kom niet. To contradict it, answer jawel or toch wel rather than a bare ja: Jawel, ik kom wel means yes, I am coming. The same works for negative statements.

The pattern

After a negative question or statement, nee agrees with it, and jawel or toch wel contradicts it. A bare ja can be unclear there.

  • A negative question or statement contains a word like niet, geen or nooit.
  • Agree: Ben je niet moe? Nee. (You are not tired.)
  • Disagree: Ben je niet moe? Jawel. (You are tired.)
  • In the full sentence after jawel, niet usually becomes wel, and geen usually becomes wel een or wel (see Geen or niet?).
  • Toch wel does the same job and sounds a little more insistent, like "it is, actually".
  • Ja plus a clear full sentence is also possible (Ja, ik ben wel moe.), but jawel makes the contradiction clear from the first word.
  • After a positive question, nothing changes: Kom je? Ja. or Nee.

Examples

Ga je niet naar de verjaardag van Daan? Jawel, ik ga wel.Aren't you going to Daan's birthday? Yes, I am.
Ben je niet moe? Nee, ik ben niet moe.Aren't you tired? No, I'm not.
Heb je geen fiets? Jawel, ik heb wel een fiets.Don't you have a bike? Yes, I do have one.
Werk je niet op vrijdag? Nee, dan ben ik vrij.Don't you work on Fridays? No, I'm off then.
Heeft Fatima geen kinderen? Jawel, ze heeft twee dochters.Doesn't Fatima have children? Yes, she has two daughters.
Heb je de huisarts nog niet gebeld? Jawel, ik heb vanochtend al gebeld.Haven't you called the GP yet? Yes, I called this morning.
Dat kan niet. Toch wel, het staat in de brief van de gemeente. That's not possible. It is, actually: it's in the letter from the council.
Je hebt geen jas bij je. Toch wel, hij zit in mijn tas.You haven't brought a coat. I have, it's in my bag.
Is het niet koud buiten? Nee, het valt mee.Isn't it cold outside? No, it's not too bad.

Why it works this way

A bare ja after a negative question is a small riddle. Does it mean "yes, you're right, I'm not coming", or "yes, I am coming"? English and Spanish simply say yes or "sí" and let the rest of the sentence explain. Dutch can do that too, but it prefers a word that settles the question at once.

Jawel is ja plus wel, with the stress on wel. You may know wel from Toch, wel, hoor, nou, gewoon: it insists that something is true, against a doubt, and it is the opposite of niet and geen. So jawel means roughly "yes, it is so, whatever you thought". French has the same tool in "si", German in "doch", and formal Arabic in "balā".

Dutch children show the system at its clearest. Their classic argument is a ping-pong of Welles! and Nietes! (Is so! Is not!) until an adult steps in.

Remember: when a question has niet or geen in it, think of your full answer. If it would contain niet or geen, start with nee. If it would contain wel, start with jawel.

Watch out

  • نادرستJa, ik doe.

    درستJawel, ik sport wel.

to Sport je niet? when you do: ik doe cannot stand alone like "I do", so repeat the verb

  • نادرستNee, ik doe niet.

    درستNee, ik eet geen vlees.

to Eet je geen vlees?: the same English habit, so repeat the verb here too

  • نادرستJawel, ik ben niet moe.

    درستNee, ik ben niet moe.

to agree with Ben je niet moe?, use nee; jawel means you disagree

  • نادرستDoch, ik kom wel.

    درستJawel, ik kom wel.

to Kom je niet?: Dutch doch is a formal word for but and cannot be used as a reply like German "doch"

Quick check

  1. Mei asks: Kom je niet naar de vergadering? You are coming. Which one-word answer is right: Nee. or Jawel.?
  2. Ahmed asks: Heb je geen honger? You have just eaten, so you are not hungry. Which one-word answer is right: Nee. or Jawel.?
  3. Joris says to Yara: Je kunt niet koken. Yara cooks every day. Fill in the word that is the opposite of niet: Toch ..., ik kook elke dag.
  4. Carlos says: De trein naar Leiden rijdt vandaag niet. You have just checked, and it is running. Which reply contradicts Carlos: Nee, hij rijdt vandaag niet. or Toch wel, hij rijdt gewoon.?
نمایش پاسخ‌ها
  1. Jawel.: you contradict niet, because you are coming. A bare Nee. would mean you are staying away.
  2. Nee.: you agree with the negative. Jawel. would mean you are hungry.
  3. wel: toch wel contradicts niet.
  4. Toch wel, hij rijdt gewoon.: it contradicts Carlos, while the other reply agrees.

Use it today

Ask a colleague or neighbour one negative question today, such as Werk je morgen niet?, and listen for nee or jawel in the answer. Then answer at least one negative question yourself with jawel and a full sentence with wel.

پرسش‌های زبان‌آموزان

What is the difference between ja and jawel in Dutch?

Ja is the normal yes to a positive question. Jawel is mainly used to contradict a negative question or statement: Kom je niet? Jawel, ik kom wel (yes, I am coming).

How do you answer a negative question in Dutch?

If you agree with the negative, say nee and keep niet or geen: Ben je niet moe? Nee, ik ben niet moe. If you disagree, say jawel or toch wel and use wel: Jawel, ik ben wel moe.

Is jawel the same as German doch?

In answers, mostly yes: jawel and toch wel contradict a negative, like German doch and French si. Dutch does have the word doch, but it is a formal word for "but" and cannot be used as a reply this way, so use jawel or toch wel.
