Want and omdat both mean because, and in most everyday sentences you can use either one, as long as you get the word order right. (One difference: want can also give the evidence for a conclusion, as in Hij is thuis, want het licht brandt. Omdat does not fit there.) Get the word order right and your Dutch sounds more fluent straight away. It also helps in inburgering and NT2 speaking and writing tasks that ask you to give a reason or explain your opinion.
Want: normal word order
After want, the sentence continues as a normal main clause, with the conjugated verb in second place. Usually the subject comes first: Ik blijf thuis, want ik ben ziek. (I am staying home, because I am ill.) Another part can come first too: Ik kom niet, want morgen moet ik werken.
Omdat: the verb goes to the end
After omdat, the verb moves to the end of that part of the sentence: Ik blijf thuis, omdat ik ziek ben. With two verbs, both go to the end: omdat ik nog moet werken.

An omdat part can come first, a want part cannot
Omdat ik ziek ben, blijf ik thuis. The whole omdat part counts as the first position, so the verb blijf comes next, before ik. You cannot do this with want: Want ik ben ziek, blijf ik thuis is wrong. Want can start a new sentence that explains the one before it: Ik blijf thuis. Want ik ben ziek.
The same pattern with other linking words
Normal word order, like want: en, maar, of (meaning or) and want. Verb at the end, like omdat: dat, als, omdat, toen, terwijl, zodat, hoewel, voordat, nadat, wanneer and of (meaning whether).
Exam tip
Speaking and writing tasks often ask for your opinion and a reason. Use both words: Ik vind het een goed idee, want het is goedkoper. and Ik fiets naar mijn werk, omdat het gezond is. Using both correctly shows you can handle Dutch word order.
