How this verb works
- Regular verb. The stem is leid. The infinitive leiden has d before -en, which is not in 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, ch, p), so the past tense takes -de (leidde, leidden) and the participle ends in -d (afgeleid).
- Separable verb. In a main clause the prefix af goes to the end: ik leid af. In a subordinate clause it stays attached: ... dat ik afleid, ... dat ik afleidde.
- In the participle, ge goes between the two parts: afgeleid.
