How this verb works

  • Regular verb. The stem is koel. The infinitive koelen has l before -en, which is not in 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, ch, p), so the past tense takes -de (koelde, koelden) and the participle ends in -d (afgekoeld).
  • Separable verb. In a main clause the prefix af goes to the end: ik koel af. In a subordinate clause it stays attached: ... dat ik afkoel, ... dat ik afkoelde.
  • In the participle, ge goes between the two parts: afgekoeld.
  • Hebben or zijn: hebben for the activity itself, zijn when you say where to or what changed. Ik heb de soep in de koelkast afgekoeld. De soep is snel afgekoeld.
