How this verb works

  • Regular verb. The stem is speel. The infinitive spelen has l before -en, which is not in 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, ch, p), so the past tense takes -de (speelde, speelden) and the participle ends in -d (afgespeeld).
  • Separable verb. In a main clause the prefix af goes to the end: ik speel af. In a subordinate clause it stays attached: ... dat ik afspeel, ... dat ik afspeelde.
  • In the participle, ge goes between the two parts: afgespeeld.
