How this verb works

  • Regular verb. The stem is los. The infinitive lossen has s before -en, one of the sounds in 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, ch, p), so the past tense takes -te (loste, losten) and the participle ends in -t (opgelost).
  • Separable verb. In a main clause the prefix op goes to the end: ik los op. In a subordinate clause it stays attached: ... dat ik oplos, ... dat ik oploste.
  • In the participle, ge goes between the two parts: opgelost.
  • Hebben or zijn: hebben for the activity itself, zijn when you say where to or what changed. We hebben het probleem opgelost. De suiker is in de thee opgelost.
