How this verb works

  • Regular verb. The stem is zet. The infinitive zetten has t before -en, one of the sounds in 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, ch, p), so the past tense takes -te (zette, zetten) and the participle ends in -t (opgezet).
  • Separable verb. In a main clause the prefix op goes to the end: ik zet op. In a subordinate clause it stays attached: ... dat ik opzet, ... dat ik opzette.
  • In the participle, ge goes between the two parts: opgezet.
