How this verb works

  • Regular verb. The stem is put. The infinitive putten has t before -en, one of the sounds in 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, ch, p), so the past tense takes -te (putte, putten) and the participle ends in -t (uitgeput).
  • Separable verb. In a main clause the prefix uit goes to the end: ik put uit. In a subordinate clause it stays attached: ... dat ik uitput, ... dat ik uitputte.
  • In the participle, ge goes between the two parts: uitgeput.
