Questions about de and het
How do I know if a Dutch word is de or het?
Look at the ending first: nouns ending in -ing, -heid, -teit, -tie, -sie, -erij, -ade, -ica almost always take de, and nouns ending in -isme, -ment, -tje almost always take het. Diminutives (-je) are always het and plurals are always de. In a compound, the last part decides: het pad, so het fietspad. If nothing fits, de is the better guess: 75% of the 34,012 nouns in our list take de.
Do plural nouns take de or het?
Always de. Het huis becomes de huizen, het kind becomes de kinderen.
Why is it het meisje if a girl is female?
Meisje ends in -je, which makes it a diminutive, and every diminutive takes het, whatever it refers to. The same goes for het mannetje and het katje.
Can a Dutch noun take both de and het?
About 739 nouns in our list can. Sometimes both are correct with the same meaning (de or het duin). Sometimes the meaning changes: het pad is a path, de pad is a toad. The checker shows both when that happens.
How many Dutch nouns are de words?
Of the 34,012 nouns in our list, 75% take de, 23% take het and the rest can take both. So when no rule helps, guess de, and spend your effort learning the common het words.
