How this verb works

  • Regular verb. The stem is stap. The infinitive stappen has p before -en, one of the sounds in 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, ch, p), so the past tense takes -te (stapte, stapten) and the participle ends in -t (gestapt).
  • When jij comes after the verb, the -t drops: jij stapt, but stap jij?
  • Hebben or zijn: hebben for the activity itself, zijn when you say where to or what changed. We hebben gisteravond lekker gestapt in de stad. Hij is in de tram gestapt.
